  14. <p>     DIED. Charles Garry, 82, pugnacious attorney best known for
  15. representing Black Panthers and antiwar protesters in the
  16. 1960s; in Berkeley. In 1967 Garry emerged as one of the nation's
  17. top radical lawyers when he took the case of Huey P. Newton, a
  18. founder of the Black Panthers. Newton had been charged with
  19. murdering a police officer in a shoot-out in Oakland, but was
  20. convicted of voluntary manslaughter. In 1978 Garry, who was
  21. legal counsel to the Rev. Jim Jones of the California-based
  22. People's Temple, escaped through the jungle before the mass
  23. murder and suicide took place at Jonestown, Guyana.
